Consists of manuscripts of complete lectures and notes used as guides to lectures created by Brown University faculty for use in Brown University classes and in extension classes. The materials date from ca. 1814 to 1956. The faculty and academic subjects taught, listed with inclusive dates of the lecture materials, that are represented in the collection include: Albert Arnold Bennett, mathematics, 1935-1940 and n.d.; Bruce Macmillan Bigelow, foreign relations, European and U.S. history, n.d.; Ben W. Brown, theater and drama, 1936-1940; George Ide Chace, chemistry and anatomy, [ca. 1833-1840s]; Robinson Potter Dunn, English literature, 1852-1858; Solomon Drowne, materia medica and botany, ca. 1814-1827; Norman Morrison Isham, architecture, 1886-1898; Henry Parker Manning, mathematics, 1903-1915; Charles V. Chapin, physiology, 1890s; Kenneth Oliver Mason, English rhetoric and composition, 1923; Lorenzo Sears, composition, 1892-1894; Rohn Truell, applied mathematics, optics, physics, 1955-1961; and Alva Woods, mathematics and natural philosophy, ca. 1823-1833. In addition to lecture manuscripts, the materials of Solomon Drowne include writings about plants, gardens, trees and forests; a few diary-type notes about his activities; and an address to a society for the physical sciences. One set of Drowne's lecture notes appears to be based on the lectures of Adam Kuhn of the College of Philadelphia. The mathematics and natural philosophy lectures of Alva Woods include the topics of optics, hydraulics, hydrostatics, aerostatics, pneumatics, electricity, astronomy, physics and mechanics, and the philosophy of language.

Solomon Drowne (1753-1834) was a surgeon from Providence, R.I. He was born in 1753, graduated from Rhode Island College (Brown University) in 1773, and received medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College.
